Michael Bender, 17, of the Wisconsin Promise program was given a special experience by Wisconsin Women’s Basketball on Wednesday, December 16, 2015, and invited back to attend the Men’s Basketball game against Purdue on Tuesday, December 29th.
Michael is a big Wisconsin Badgers fan and loves keeping track of game statistics. As part of the Wisconsin Promise program, youth are exposed to short-term and long-term career goals to help reduce poverty. Micahel’s long-term career goal is to run statistics for a sports team. For Michael’s special experience he was able to meet with the team during their shoot around and enjoy the team meal. Before the game Michael met with the Stats Crew to learn their codes and see how their system works. During the game Michael sat on press row and listened in with the Stats Crew as they took game notes.
Michael’s Promise Counselor, Annie Mesich, worked with him to identify jobs and experiences related to his interests in sports and stats. His career goal is to be sports announcer and/or sports column writer. Since enrolling in Wisconsin Promise, Michael worked for the Madison Mallard’s last summer, job shadowed with the Badgers, and is looking forward to a job shadow at Fox 47 in the near future.
Thanks to Badgers Give Back for creating and producing the video and providing this opportunity.
